Another parameter to be taken into account in LDRs is that their rise time, when illuminated, and their fall (or extinction) time, when darkened, are different and depend on both the material and the illumination level. They are also sensitive to temperature, which affects their sensitivity to incident radiation, especially for low-level illumination (it causes a thermal electron-hole generation). Temperature also causes the thermal noise that appears as current fluctuations when a voltage is applied to the photoresistor in order to measure it.
Figure 2.23 shows that the spectral response of LDRs is narrow for various materials. Therefore the appropriate material depends on the wavelength of the radiation to be detected, taking also into account that the materials must be transparent to those wavelengths. In the visible range of the spectrum (400 to 700 nm) and in the nearest infrared (700 to 1400 nm) cadmium-based materials are used (CdS, CdSe, CdTe). In the near infrared (1.4 to 3 m) lead-based materials are used (PbS, PbSe, PbTe). In the medium (3 to 14 j.m) and far (up to 1 mm) infrared various indium-based materials (InSb, InAs), tellurium, tellurium-cadmium-mercury alloys, and doped silicon and germanium are used.
Sensors used for long wavelengths (low energy) must be kept at low temperature by using the inverse Peltier effect (Section 6.1.1) or a cryostat for refrigeration in order tb reduce thermal noise. Consequently they are not available as ordinary resistors.
Ordinary photoconductors, which are useful at ambient temperatures, are CdS, PbS, and PbSe, CdS being the most common. They are manufactured in a very broad range of shapes and also in symmetrical and differential configurations for ease of application. Figure 2.24 shows a low-cost model with plastic encapsulation useful for moderate temperature and humidity. Time constants range from 100 ms for some CdS models to 2 .ts for some PbSe ones. The maximal accepted voltage for no illumination is from 100 to 600 V, and the maximal power dissipation at 25°C is from 50 mW to 1 W.
Applications for ordinary LDRs can be divided between those related to low-precision, low-cost light measurement and those that use light as a radiation to be modified. Some pertaining to the first group are automatic brightness and contrast control in TV receivers, diaphragm control in photographic cameras, fire detection, and public street light control. The second group includes presence and position detection and some tank level measurements.
