Figure 3.1. It consists of placing a known stable resistor in series with the unknown one. First a reading is taken across that resistor and then another reading across the unknown one. Afterward the quotient between both readings is calculated.

The first reading gives

Vs= V/(Rs+Rx ) Rs

The second one gives

Vx = V/(Rs+Rx) Rx

From the quotient between both readings R can be calculated as Rx = Rs Vx/Vs

If R and R are similar in value, the voltmeter error in both readings will be similar and will cancel when taking the quotient. The need for two readings inherent to this method makes it unsuitable for sensor measurement because of the inconvenience of the needed switching when the measurement must be fast. Also when the output signal must be in electrical form, it is not possible to make the quotient by hand.
