This 10 Watt OTL amplifier circuit is included in the Hi-Fi category and fully uses transistor-based components. This amplifier is suitable for increasing the sound of an MP3 player, CD player or audio from a computer.

The OTL amplifier circuit stands for Output Transformer Less, which in principle the OTL amplifier uses a capacitor coupling at its output, not a transformer or directly without any coupling. The electronic amplifier circuit with the OTL system has advantages, one of which is that when a part of the power transistor or surrounding components is damaged, the loudspeaker will not be damaged because the speaker is protected from DC voltage due to the coupling capacitor blocking the DC voltage.

The amplifier circuit as shown above has 4 main parts, namely the power supply, pre-amp, tone control and power amplifier. Basically, the pre-amplifier or pre-amp circuit and tone control are the same as other circuits in general, but what makes it different is that the power amplifier circuit uses the OTL system.

The pre-amp circuit uses a darlington configuration to obtain a higher current gain from the input audio signal. Potentiometer VR1 functions as a gain (volume) setting, VR2 for treble settings, and VR3 for bass settings.

In operation, this amplifier circuit requires a -42V power supply. a negative supply is needed because all of these circuits are based on PNP type transistor components so that a negative supply is needed. When the circuit has been assembled, first the offset voltage must be set to near zero (DC) at the loudspeaker output by setting the VR4 rotation.

Because power transistors, especially TR7 and TR8, will emit high enough heat when the circuit operates at maximum, it is necessary to have sufficient aluminum cooler so that when the circuit releases optimal power, the power transistor is not at risk of damage due to overheating.
